How to write effective survey questions
Question quality determines answer quality
A poorly worded question produces unusable data. Here are the fundamental principles for questions that work.
Be specific
"Are you satisfied with our services?" is too vague. "How would you rate the speed of our customer support this week?" is actionable. The more specific the question, the more useful the answer.
Stay neutral
Avoid formulations that lead the answer. "How much do you appreciate..." suggests a positive response. Prefer: "How would you rate...".
One idea per question
"Was the training interesting and well organized?" mixes two dimensions. Separate into two distinct questions for usable data.
Match the scale to the topic
A 1-5 scale works for satisfaction. A 0-10 scale is standard for NPS. For frequency, offer concrete options ("never," "1-2 times per month," "every week") rather than a numeric scale.
Test before sending
Have 2-3 people review your survey. If a question is understood differently by different people, reword it.
Quervey's AI automatically applies these principles when generating your questions. And if you write manually, it can suggest improvements.
